A bone-white horned skull and a cocoon of gauzy white fabric are the kind of props that lend themselves to adjectives like haunting. And yet, there’s nothing ghostly about model Sheri as she poses on the New York rooftops: with such a strong and dominating presence, there could be no doubting that she’s flesh and blood.
Paul Morel’s photographs are breathtaking in their composition. The cloudy sky is twice as dramatic in stormy black and white; a shot of Sheri from above has her lying in shadows, the white skull and naked skin the only things the light touches.
