Forget it, Jake, it’s Chinatown!
Whether its the Chinatown of 1930s LA, where Jack Nicholson’s fictional private detective found repeated misfortune, or the old Chinatown slums of East London, the very name can have implications of something a little dark and gritty. A place that has its own laws, something shadowy beneath the surface, an allure of the forbidden and unknown.
New York’s Chinatown, the city-within-a-city where Henryk Lobaczewski‘s latest shoot was photographed, is not now the dangerous slum it used to be in the 19th century. But in the red neon glow, the streaks of light against confined dark space, the exotic and oriental influenced clothing, the mood is one that brilliantly marries the bustle of modern Chinatown with the danger of the old.
