Angels and devils, and Jessica Stam

I’m not one for horoscopes and thier vague assertions that I should be positive in the face of the adversity that might come my way today. But if anything I’ve always felt an affinity for the twins of my sign; the yin and the yang, the mortal and the immortal, the Castor and the Pollux.

So while the dichotomy of naughty/nice angel/devil should have been done to death, it’s not only a timeless one (can’t we all relate), it’s one I’m always drawn to. We don’t always have to play one character, and fashion is a perfect vehicle for that fact.

In Flare Magazine’s September 2011 issue, Jessica Stam is the girl who flits between naughty and nice – though some of these looks to my eye border both. The angel manifests mostly in pretty white lace, while the devil side takes the demureness down a notch in darker, more revealing outfits.

It’s cliche but it works, and the best part is that any of these pieces can go towards a look that’s naughty or nice, depending entirely on how you style them. With the exception of perhaps the ribbon bondage dress, which would be hard to disguise as angelic.  Not that I see that as a deterrent: after all, as the saying goes, get rid of all your demons and your angels might die too.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
