Rapture: the definition of The New Noir

The fashion world loves labeling things the new this and the new that. Of course, these things are not ‘new’ in so much as they are rebirths or evolutions; fashion trend phoenixes rising from the ashes of yesteryear and adapting to fit their contemporary surroundings. But while the “new” anything is an oversimplification, there are times when it’s just the easiest way to sum up these deciduous movements that bloom and then shed their leaves and then bloom again in another guise, in another year. And as such things go, we might well call this The New Noir.

It’s got roots in gothic romance, an edge of modern punk, but with the addition of sparkling metallics and cinematic spiral curls – the latter a fall 2013 hair trend wrapped in drama and mystery. All those elements come together in perfect harmony here – in a shoot for the latest issue of FASHIONTREND Magazine Australia – creating imagery that itself defines, beyond words, the meaning of The New Noir.

Entitled Rapture, the photo series by Karla Majnaric was styled to noir-glam perfection by Julia-louise Premoselli. The ‘fatal glance’ that Editor Nikita Papas alludes to in his prose is a product of model Stephanie Murphy’s god-given smoulder, heightened by a brazen beauty directive by Belinda Zollo. Freda Rossidis created the curtain of silver screen curls – the crowning glory to the source of all this rapture.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
