The best thing about combining fashion and film is being able to interpret the inspiration of the collection based on the artistic direction of the film. Salasai’s autumn 2013 collection, Heartlands, is very much retro with a fall color palette punctuated by pops of yellow. The short film, directed by Claire Littler in collaboration with Tay Kaka, features an unconventional couple who are impeccably dressed but are living a slightly awkward life in a middle class home.
As per Claire Littler, “The clothes of the AW 2013 collection for Salasai reference some of the coolest decades, the 50s and 70s, so we decided to draw out the 70s feel, I guess there is a hint to the aftermath of the 50s suburban dream. These two characters are living in a state of chaos and their relationship is clearly in a similar state.”
If the whole thing feels a bit Wes Anderson to you, you’re not alone: the Francois Hardy track backing the video was indeed the same one used in Moonrise Kingdom.
