This is the place where fashion and erotica meet. A place that’s become more nebulous in its definition, more open in it’s acceptance of new ideas. An independent magazine like Bambi is most at home in these blurry places, places where rules only decide what’s good enough to make the cut; not what’s acceptable enough for society to see. Pino Leone’s shoot for Bambi’s latest issue is Sapphic erotica in full force – but the styling never comes second to that fact. I can’t say whether Leone created the concept to fit Simona Sanfedele’s styling or vice-versa, but the two work together in perfect synergy. The jewellery by Halaby – a designer inspired by his own oriental heritage – could easily be counted as one of the true stars of the shoot, from intricate headpieces and tasselled necklaces to giant faux cut cabochon rings that burgeon out into gold feather fans.
With the hint of another era taking shape in the oriental opulence, the beading and draping, and the 1920s finger waves, it’s easy to imagine that this passionate interracial affair is of the forbidden variety. Though, in the fantastical world of fashion and courtesy of Bambi, neither the romance nor Pino Leone’s work are taboo.
