The absolute magic of metallics

I’m drawn to shiny things, I’ll admit. Beyond being on trend, metallic pieces have a deeper and more lasting allure: the promise of magic, of something precious, mythological. Metallics can be candy-wrapper foil or mermaid scales, Art Deco gold, the Chrysler Building lit up in the New York city skyline… With enough imagination, a gold flecked blouse is a night sky swimming with stars and a pair of burnished lace jeans were spun from the same gold thread as some ornate Baroque upholstery. And so it is that shiny, metallic things are worthy of their own editorial, where the soul of the 1920s and 30s is transfused into the modern day.

Ashton Phillips is the golden girl of Jennifer Avello’s shoot for Bambi Magazine’s 14th issue. The hair and makeup by Andrea C Samuels aligns perfectly to Thomas Vaughan’s luminous styling: gelled finger waves and bronze eyeshadow or – in one particularly striking look that breaks from gold but proves silver isn’t necessarily second best – a tousled crop and eyes as silvery as moonlight, perfect for the metallic armour of a silver sequin jacket.

Avello’s shoot is a mashed bowl of eras and moods, picking inspirations from the 20s, the 60s, the now… but in all of that, the one constant is the magic promise of precious silver and gold.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
