Weekend special: a creative, cultural, colourful mixing pot

With a shoot that draws so heavily from the multi-cultural and historical background of the African existence it is difficult to know where to start when understanding and breaking down this complexly beautiful and exotic fashion. The inspiration for the shoot stems far into the reach of Africa, South Africa and the history that is holds within its pages. African culture is steeped in colour, inequality, creation, challenge and filled with all the reverence that life has to offer.

The combined talents of photographer Steve Marias, stylist Melissa Maxted-Henderson, art director Colin O’Mara and make-up artist Kelli Fuchs come together in this shoot to create a feast for the eyes, and an avenue to witness what it truly means to collaborate on a creative and artistic level, in every medium possible – fashion, illustration, photography, beauty.

The title of the shoot “Weekend Special” takes the viewer back to song released by South African artist, Brenda Fassie, a figurehead in African culture and history. This shoot represents this empowered and emancipated African woman, and displays the colour and life in fashion that goes along with it.

Born into the humble town of Franschhoek, South Africa it was little wonder that Chevaun Roux would find her flavour in life through good food, good wine and stylish apparel. After completing a Bacherlors Degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics the world of freelance writing became the first choice in occupation, with no regrets and having never looked back. With a zest for anything with colour, vibrance and essence she found herself diving further into the world of fashion and design; from thifting vintage wedding dresses to pouring through new and modern jewelry pieces. This self anointed bohemian indentity believes in all the partisan revolutionary ideals of love, beauty and freedom, and when she isn’t writing or editing you can find her at the kitchens helm creating her latest milkshake masterpiece.
