Rihanna in a corset and ripped jeans

Rihanna is no stranger to the lingerie as outerwear trend, but while we've seen plenty of exposed stay-ups, this is one of the first examples of a corset worn as outerwear that we've seen in a long time. She paired her corset with ripped jeans and reptile skin heels while out and about in New York recently.

Lily Cole wears an Alberta Ferretti fringed dress

As far as the fringed dress trend goes, Alberta Ferretti is a strong choice. Model-come-actress Lily Cole showed off her ridiculously long legs in one of Ferretti's flapper-esque numbers at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival this week.

Plaid trend street style: Stockholm, Sweden

Here's another example of the plaid trend on the street; and it's one I'm quite keen on. Shot by The Fashionist, I love the country-style Englishness of the blazer.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt elegant at Cannes

With so many of her outfits venturing little further than black, black, and more black, I can't say how refreshing it is to see Angelina Jolie in something a little lighter. In a draping nude Versace gown and classic bright red lips, Jolie looked picture perfect on the red carpet at Cannes.

Angelina's side-parted hair was a played-down, less polished take on the 1940s wave that we've seen so much of as a 2009 hair trend, and was well matched with her classically elegant dress.

Military trend street style: Balmain jacket, Paris

Here's one shot of the military trend that's just too cool not to draw your attention to. A detail shot of Balmain's highly recognisable military jacket, the photo shows the intricate detailing and ornate features of the piece.

Doutzen Kroes at Cannes Film Festival, 2009

Leave it to Doutzen Kroes to make the sheer trend simultaneously sexy and sweet. Her plunging lace gown was perfect red carpet attire for the Cannes International Film Festival 2009, where Kroes was attending the premiere of 'Looking For Eric'. But while we love Doutzen's addition of the laceup shoe trend, the black is a little heavy for the uber-feminine dress.

Ripped stockings street style: Stockholm, Sweden

As an element of the neo-grunge movement made so prominent by designers like Alexander Wang, ripped stockings are a must. It's also one of the rarer trends to be far more popular on the streets than on the runways. Here's another example courtesy of The Fashionist; a snap taken in Sweden.

Military trend street style: Berlin

It seems there are few better examples of 2009's military trend than those that appear on the street. This model (at Berlin Fashion Week 2009) was snapped by Stil In Berlin wearing a vintage pilot's jacket, made all the more cool by the pairing with Ann Demeulemeester boots.
