My name is Sarah, I am 27 (will be 28 on July 19th) and I'm from Dayton, Ohio. I am the owner and editor in chief of Skylar Magazine. Skylar is a fashion magazine that features emerging models, talent, fashion designers, and others from the fashion, beauty, talent and entertainment department. Our goal is to help these individuals gain the exposure they desire and to give them the recognition they deserve, while keeping our readers updated on all the latest in fashion, style, trends on fashion, and hair and makeup, as well as keeping them informed on health related issues. We feature articles about real people, with real problems that are inspiring and interesting.
I started this project back in June of 2004. Our first issue "Summer 2005" was launched on July 19, 2005 and we are getting ready to release our 4th issue Spring Summer 2006 on July 19th which will be Skylar's 1st Birthday. I have always wanted to create my own fashion magazine. When I was 12 years old I discovered the wonderful world of fashion, supermodels, and celebrities, and became fascinated by it all. Writing has also been a passion of mine and I have always been a big dreamer, and I have always wanted to be able to do all of these things.
Supermodel Niki Taylor has always been a huge inspiration to me. I was very drawn to her Cover girl ads and her smile and from that point on I was hooked on Supermodels, and fashion. I was an aspiring model (and still am), but according to modeling industry standards I am not tall enough to be a Supermodel. I am only 4'11" and in the modeling world you have to be 5'7 or taller.
Although I have never given up on the idea of becoming a model (and I never will), I started focusing more on the writing and fashion part. I had a learning disability growing up and had to take learning disability classes and I never got the opportunity to go to college. Still, I have never let that get in the way of my dreams. I feel that you do not have to have a degree in order to be successful and have your own business. I have never let anything discourage me and I believe being in learning disability classes has made me work harder and has even inspired me to do all of these things I have been dreaming about for years.
I was told through out my life that I was not good enough. I was tormented by my classmates who weren't in learning disability classes aka "regular kids". I was also told many times that I had unrealistic goals. I do admit that I have always lived in a dream world, but I feel there is nothing wrong with that. Regardless of what everyone told me, or thought, I never let it discourage me and I have never given up and I never will. I do not give up easily, and when I put my mind to something I go for it.
I know that writing, and having my own fashion magazine is what I was meant to do. Something in my heart told me that I had to create Skylar and that this is my destiny.
I have always had a fascination with fashion, magazines, glamour, Hollywood, celebrities, supermodels, and I love looking at all the beautiful pictures in magazines. I love couture, and I love reading tips on how to wear my hair, and makeup. I love reading about real people, and people I can relate to. I find supermodels to be very fascinating, because of how well they can pose, and look amazing in front of the camera, and how gracefully they move down the runway.
As much as I love all of these things, there are some things that also really bother me. The fact that you have to be tall and skinny in order to be a supermodel, the fact that it is so difficult to get discovered in hollywood and how so many people are turned down and most of the people who are rejected have been working their butts off to get there. So, I decided I wanted to create something of my own. My own magazine, with fresh new faces, and brand new emerging artists from music, acting, fashion and much more. I wanted to create my own world of celebrities, my own little "Hollywood". People might call us wannabe's, but I believe we have a place in "Hollywood". If you have a lot of talent, confidence, beauty, passion, and the drive to make it all happen you should be able to show others what you have to offer. This is my way of recognizing these hard working individuals, and do my best to open doors for them. I want to give them a chance to express themselves doing the things they love and if none of us ever makes it to Hollywood, at least we tried and have not given up on it.
My goal is to open the minds of the fashion, and modeling industries, and show them that you do not have to be tall and skinny in order to look beautiful in couture clothing, or walk down a runway. I'm not saying to get rid of "Giselle Bundchen" or all those gorgeous women of Victoria Secret who really do inspire most of us, I am just saying to give others a chance as well. I think it would be awesome to one day open a Victoria Secret Catalog and see Giselle Bundchen, and a Petite model like Shaelyn Phatruong (winner of our first model search) and a plus sized model all on the same page.
I truly believe that all of these things can happen. No one can stop you from living your dreams except you.
My Style
Skylar magazine features all different styles of clothing. Vintage, diy, reconstructed clothing, as well as original pieces created from scratch. We are fashion lovers, and are very mainstream and are becoming more diverse as we grow. This magazine is for anyone who loves fashion. We try to include clothing that fits everyone's tastes. Some people want affordable clothing, and some love to spend, spend, spend. So, prices of the garments and accessories vary. There is something in the magazine for everyone.Favourite Labels
Some of the more well known designers and labels we love are Carolina Herrera, Roberto Cavalli, Fendi, Gucci, Donna Karan, Betsey Johnson, Bill Blass, Valentino, Anna Sui, Versace, Heatherette, Marc Jacobs. We also love designers, and shops that are not well known such as VintageAmore.com, YesterdaysMoment.com, LuckyCocunuts.com, GreatGlam.com, GiannasCloset.com, DolceEleganzaBoutique.com, Glamazonia.com, JelasEmporium.com, TabloidStyle.com, BeachBliss.com, ModCloth.com and many many more.Best Feature
My best feature would have to be my nose. I would not change it for the world. If I ever broke it or had to have it fixed, I would be devestated. As for Skylar's best feature, I would have to say Fashion Direct is my favorite, because I love writing about fashion, and style and trends. It also gives me the chance to discover new designers.Something You Should Know
Skylar's age target is 18-30, but we do have readers that are under 18, and over 30. We are inspired by Vogue, Bazaar, W, In Style and other magazines, because we love how sophisticated they are, we love their style of writing, and how organized they are.Interests
