It’s not all that uncommon for Philip Lim to go out on a limb when it comes to seeking his own inspiration. By keeping things under a familiar tough note, the designer found a modern way to reinterpret Danny Lyon’s captivating black & white photography, and to capture its mere edge essence for pre-fall 2013. Lim’s unique vision didn’t involve a literal translation of the raw outlaw bikers’ outfits, as it was more about borrowing some of the untamed attitude and relaxed spirit surrounding their quest.
As he pictured a seasonless wardrobe, that is both tough and light, Philip Lim went straight for the oversized concept that he cleverly used to re-work the iconic varsity jackets. Bold phoenix motifs were chosen alongside gun-metal bugle beads, to embody some of the motorcyclist’s wild aesthetic.
In a game of contrasting subtlety and high-impact, Philip Lim’s pre-fall 2013 collection managed to steer in the right direction, focusing on uplifting garments that effortlessly mix edge with an unmistakable sense of elegance. It’s all about a well balanced wardrobe, meant to be functional, timeless but still irresistible modern. The Philip Lim woman is independent, tough but impeccably styled as she follows her own journey. She knows exactly what she wants, and so does Philip Lim.
