While most designers have, for the most part, abandoned last year’s sports obsession, Alexander Wang has been keeping it loosely in mind. As such it’s made a return for his Resort 2012 collection, evolved though to leave behind the tomboy football socks and instead find its way out of the gym bags of professional athletes. There are slick parachute pieces, swimsuits that could almost belong in a competitive Olympic pool were it not for their sexy cut-away details, bottoms that resemble tailored board-shorts, and plenty of utility toggles, ties, panels and pockets – not least of which mirror the heavy external pockets we spotted in many a men’s collection.
This is a collection certainly not for everyone; but it keeps Wang’s relaxed cool-factor at heart and, at its slickest, the brightly coloured mesh elements and clean leather pieces will no doubt spur a new influx of sports editorials and photo shoots.
