It’s often the case that when we sit down to take in the work of fashion school graduates we’re presented with collections that lean heavily towards the abstract. Students are often want to treat their graduating offerings as an expression of art. It was for this reason that Ana Diaz’s showing at LMFF (the L’Oreal Melbourne fashion festival) stood out: not because Diaz had offered up something abstract, but because she’d leaned towards the opposite end of the spectrum and offered up a collection that is utterly pret-a-porter.
And that in itself is relatively unique. Where others seemingly dare not tread, Diaz offered up a collection of three-quarter length, leather skirts, pleated shorts and layered polka dots. Courtesy of the clogs and colour palette there was an undertone of the 70s running through the collection, though it was an undertone easily overpowered by the frivolity of a catwalk where models high-fived each other, stuck out their tongues for the camera, and jumped into the air.
