Backstage at Billtornade‘s fall 2011 showing, an industrial strength smoke machine was being shovelled with fuel as if it were the engine of a locomotive steam train. When the lights dimmed and the show began, billowing clouds of smoke appeared creating the theatrical backdrop to the runway. Or was it the shrouding fog of a cold Scottish countryside? With tartan and plaid playing a starring role in the collection, the latter wasn’t too much a leap of the imagination.
And while the resurgence of punk elements means a good pair of skinny tartan pants can make an on-trend statement, Billtornade’s styling leaned more to the traditional side – with the plaids even ending up on kilts and vests (albeit they with pocketed, leather-trimmed twists).
Elsewhere in the collection military and aviator references crept their way in, while smartly-cut outerwear in black and camel tones provided yet more staple options for the male winter wardrobe.
