Inspiration from John Varvatos, Fall 2010

At first glance, John Varvatos‘ Autumn / Fall 2010 showing is sharp and relatively classic; a palette almost of all black which transitions into greys and browns. Is there anything to be inspired by in such an offering? Turns out, there is.

Guys who want to mix dandy tailored looks with a modern edge – but don’t want to step too far out of their comfort zone – should look to Varvatos for some subtle and understated ideas:

  • Layering. Varvatos layered semi-sheer knits under hooded or leather jackets, under chunky knit cardigans or wool coats. Add a scarf and/or gloves in a complimentary colour and you’re well on your way to an interesting yet cohesive layered look.
  • Leather chaps. As seen in this look, leather boot covers add a definitely something to a winter outfit and are a good wardrobe extender – that is, you can mix and match them with various shoes and outfits.
  • Brooches or pins. Varvatos’ outfits were given that extra bit of detail by way of flower brooches at the lapel. In muted colours and unextravagant sizes, these little accessories are a fantastic accompaniment to a modern dandy-meets rocker look.

The key to Varvatos’ look is to layer up and accessorise but to keep colours and textures simple and complimentary. For more pictures of the collection browse through the gallery below.
