Kate Sylvester’s spring 2011 showing at Australian fashion week received a lot of post-show ho-hums simply because the staging had been so dark. Even from the front row the view of the clothing was often obscured in the swirling fog and darkness of the setting. It was catwalk as drama, and for that reason the best view was neither from the seats nor from the photographers’ pit as is typically the case. Instead it was from the rafters that the best view could be found. So it was that we dispatched photographer Kelly Defina high above everyone else to peer down and capture a more interesting perspective of the creative staging.
