As the music failed, descending this old threatre into a silence broken only by the sound of camera clicks and a photographer singing an impromptu soundtrack, Songzio’s autumn / fall 2011 showing was off to something of a false start. Two lessons to be learned: catwalks without music are dull, and Gareth Pugh’s desire to have total control over his collection launches by having not a catwalk but a video presentation makes much sense. Thankfully, after what can only have been frantic minutes in the lives of the production staff, the false start became a restart and another Paris fashion week showing was underway. And what we were presented with was a hint of the alternative without the toned down simplicity that usually comes with it.
For their autumn 2011 offering Songzio Is another label to concentrate on some of the key elements for men: a fusion of fabrics, loose cut pants (Songzio’s have more than a hint of 30’s formalwear to them), and zips as embellishments both on sleeves and trouser ankles. And while the collection’s shearling bomber and and red statement pieces may have stood out, the use of leather cummerbunds as a mens’ accessory serves as a reminder as to how, for men, the simplest of accessories can often be the most effective.
