Alexander Wang’s aesthetic is constant, and yet under constant refinement. It’s because of that careful balance of faithfulness and progress that each collection continues to wow: and in time the Wang woman has grown up alongside the designer, keeping her sporty coolness and yet becoming more elegant with each passing season.
Pre-fall 2013 sets Wang down a promising path (and just in time for an impending Balenciaga appointment, it would seem). The key things here are contrasts of draped liquidity and tailoring, chic sportiness and elegant sophistication.
Wang plays with layered lengths – cropped pants under long vests under shorter jackets – and volume. And rarely does an Alexander Wang collection go by without some accessory that seems a spark of genius so great and yet so simple you’re left wondering why it hadn’t been done before: in this case a structured clutch-like bag transformed into a sporty backpack. Expect plenty of these on the street come fashion week.
