Ann Demeulemeester’s layered-up, brooding men tend to have something of a Gothic romanticism to them, and for fall / winter 2013 she took that to places that bordered on monastic and austere. Nick Cave could have been the high priest of this black and white parade, his deep baratone rumbling O Children in the background of her Paris fashion week (PFW) show.
But for all the length and the high collars, Demeulemeester’s fall 2013 offering was not heavy. Full mohair pieces in white had an angelic quality, and jackets with a baroque flower motif could be worn as grunge-luxe or classic. Mysterious layerings of varied lengths are a Demeulemeester staple and this time around – in full black or full white – they had a definite intrigue.
