Antoni and Alison celebrated 25 years in the business by opening London fashion week (LFW) with a collection called New Work. It doesn’t get much more a literal title than that, and yet it’s a title that gives very little away. All we knew was that, despite the anniversary, this was to be something new.
What that turned out to be was a spring / summer 2013 collection filled with prints. These were modern, vibrant, whimsical. And in this case prints didn’t necessarily mean patterns – instead each dress was like a canvas for artworks that were sometimes brushstroke paintings, sometimes 3-D appliques, sometimes laser-cutting or a combination of all three. The subjects were sometimes floral or perhaps a constellation of scattered jewels, at other times they were abstract shapes or washes of colour.
But it wouldn’t be a first show – or an anniversary – without a bit of fanfare and aside from the carnival of whimsical pieces, Antoni and Alison brought that with a real-life marching band. It wasn’t a dramatic opener – but it was a fun one.
