They say that home is where the heart is. Whether that’s true or not, Antonio Marras was certainly at home yesterday as his autumn / winter 2013 collection was revealed at Milan fashion week. Normally you could say that a collection hit the catwalk, but that’s only partly true for Marras. His catwalk this year weaved through several rooms and had a figurative house built right in the middle of it.
Replete with doors, windows, a family and their gardener, this was a spectacle and catwalk fusion at its best. It was elegant, Italian and homely, but never a backdrop. Instead so real was this temporary house that, as the models began their journey around Palazzo Clerici and the home’s live-in soprano began to provide the show’s live soundtrack, the fictional family’s trusty dog could be heard to bark. He was protecting his home.
You could see from the opening piece of Antonio Marras’s collection just how it and this figurative home were so entwined. Like the well loved wood of many an Italian home in the countryside, pieces had a familiar feel to them. Nothing seemed in its original state. Prints spoke of the garden’s blooms, patches made up coats and dresses in such a way that they felt more akin to old layers of wallpaper exposed from beneath newer coats of paint, and the gold threads running through everything from socks to dresses not only proved that metallic clothing will remain on trend to the end of the year but also felt borrowed from, or perhaps at least inspired by, a home’s gilt-edged picture frames.
Take in the silhouette of many a Marras piece and you’d pick up on something of a 20s / 30s vibe. But this is no recreationism. Instead it is the being of old, Italian homes realised in modern fashion. Old homes aren’t static; they are layers of years of love, decoration and life made homely. Layers are the key Antonio Marras’ autumn 2013 collection – layers sometimes as patched repairs, sometimes as jarring homely prints and sometimes as eye catching detail. But each wholly warm and wholly appropriate.
