One part sex appeal two parts cool, reverberating with an electric rock’n'roll note: Barbara Bui stood by that formula for spring / summer 2014, and it worked as well as ever. The Bui girl is one everyone wants to be – both effortless and polished, sexy yet too cool to care, youthful always at heart if not in years, never afraid to bare a midriff or a long, lean pair of legs.
This season Bui worked some kind of alchemy on denim, turning it from a base fabric into conceptual gold. It was embroidered, frayed, appliquéd, shredded and sheared. It was tailored into a light blue pant suit, and sculptured into a sinewy corset-dress. It was neither dressed up nor dressed down, instead finding some luxury space of its own in between.
The collection overall was far more sporty in feel than seasons past: hotpants, crop tops, sporty bandeau bras and a consistent pairing with flat shoes gave the whole show an effortless, near to tomboyish quality that never once took away from its overriding sex appeal.
As a spring collection, Bui’s brings plenty to covet – not least the beautifully pleated voluminous white shirt or sweeping spring coats. But it was her tempering with denim and denim hues that made the collection stand out. There, Bui simultaneously created something new while paying homage to something timeless.
