The ’60s films of Jean-luc Godard were playing on Bella Saakova and Francis Ronez’s minds, inspiring a “chic and retro” aesthetic for BillTornade’s spring 2013 collection. Godard’s works coloured the pieces with a palette of muted greys and blues against retro beiges; they inspired the emphasis on skinny suiting. But the holiday vibe the brand was aiming for manifested in richly hued palm prints on lightweight pieces – sleeveless tanks and shirts tied casually round the waist and looped through the front of jeans – and these felt distinctively modern.
The retro-infused holiday vibe also shone through, as it has in so many men’s collections this season, in cuffed-up pants or shorts and shoes worn sans socks. This is the way to do suiting for summer.
