Dreamy blue skies building the perfect venue and silvered spheres mirroring the idea of artistic clouds hanging across the room, set the appropriate atmosphere for the whimsical and surreal collection Raf Simons pictured for the fall / winter 2013 season. Embracing his sensibility and establishing an artistic connection with his audience, Simons never felt more belonging to a house like Dior.
By choosing to explore Andy Warhol’s early drawings as graphic inspiration for his dreamlike collection, Simons managed to also consolidate the remarkable affinity that he and Christian Dior apparently shared. Their love for art and their retro fascination created a bridge between past and present, best reflected in the spectacular “memory dresses” gently embroidered with symbolic motifs.
Part of the playful vision, the lightweight chiffon dresses accented with Warhol’s women portraits and spidery shoe drawings represented an unexpected, but absorbing segment of the line. The absence of breathtaking evening gowns in the show was replaced by an intriguing take on classic knits, as they were reimagined as building ruffled peplums or overstated bows in the pursuit to accent the creative silhouettes. Old, new, real and surreal, Raf Simons’ show had it all beautifully figured out.
