Cividini’s spring / summer 2013 was themed convention vs conviction. Conviction is perhaps not the best English word to describe what the designer was getting at, but the point was clear: taking conventional items and adding a defiant twist that spun them off their axis of conventionality. Despite the brief though, there was nothing wildly unconventional about Cividini’s collection.
Instead Cividini’s Milan fashion week (MFW) show was filled with subtle alterations to the classics: the summer staple of a white linen dress, for example, was reinterpreted in a crepe linen gauze with a linen lining peeking out from beneath. The everyday cotton jersey was reworked to have a printed cotton back. A pinafore dress was given an irregularly pleated bodice. Even the sporty crop top was produced in a soft knit. If Cividini’s aim was to turn convention to conviction, it did so with wearable subtlety.
