The oddball mix of smiley faces and cemeteries cartoonishly drawn in an accompanying booklet placed upon the front row seats at Devastee’s catwalk made you wonder if something dark was on the way. Surprisingly what came next was far sportier than the smiling tombstones would have had you believe: Devastee’s spring 2013 Paris fashion week runway was bouncy, cool, filled with quirky prints, and saw models topped in baseball caps and tailed in tennis shoes.
Devastee’s happy tombstones sketched their way across silk dresses and t-shirts. Other pieces layered blocks of black and white with stripes or prints. If Devastee’s sketchings were peddling a kind of frivolity in the face of death (unfortunately most of the book’s text was, literally, French to me) the theme took shape most strongly at the end when models paraded in baseball caps draped with black netting, like merry widows gone from the tennis court to the cemetery. In all, nothing about the theme felt morbid because of the lightness that permeated through it. Making tombstones both quirky and cute? I’m not sure how, but Devastee managed it.
