Dirk Bikkembergs is one of the only shows at Milan fashion week (MFW) in which you can reliably expect new and creative ways of seeing luxury injected into casual sportswear. Or, to put it another way, where else would you see tracksuit pants paired with a velvet dinner jacket?
The words contrast, juxtaposition and “collision of universes apparently in conflict with one another” were bandied about in the press notes, and couldn’t have been more accurate: many brands speak about bringing conflicting things into a unified whole, but Bikkembergs’ unusual experimentations with texture, colour, layering and technology-driven construction are something else.
From the colour palette of bright orange to emerald green, to the reinterpretation of the classic sportscoat into one that was heat-sealed and made from beaver fur, Bikkembergs’ fall collection wasn’t exactly understated when you looked at as a whole. But take individual pieces and you’ve got plenty of foundations for a luxe-sporty look.
