If we can be thankful of one thing, it’s that Elie Saab showed his fall 2012 collection on the last day of Paris fashion week. For it was a collection that gave the week a polished finished, a heavy infusion of glamour, and paid no credence to the masculinity and volume that has occupied the mind of many a fashion week designer.
In fact, the only elements of that potential fall 2012 trend that Elie Saab played to was a loose cut coat and the peplum waist which opened the show on a banged Karlie Kloss. From there the show transitioned through what we expect of an Elie Saab autumn / winter collection: strong day wear motifs (rather structured for fall 2012, with many a visual trick employed) followed by the show stoppers.
Naturally the first of those coming-soon-to-a-red-carpet-near-you dresses came out hugging the shoulders of Karlie Kloss, its thigh-high slit showing why she’s everyone’s go-to model. And from there the collection built to a crescendo with centre splits, plunging necklines and metallic embellishments aplenty.
You’d be hard pressed to argue that Elie Saab turned out a fall 2012 collection better than his spring 2012 one, but on a Parisian day where Jardin des Tuileries say vacant as the heavens poured down, it was precisely the runway that was needed.
