To appropriate Napoleon: you can know a man by looking back to when he first hit his stride. We are all the sum of our best moments, and Giorgio Armani is the sum of his. Hence, at a catwalk show filled to capacity and with model after model (after model – who else presents as many looks as Armani in a single showing?) streaming by, Giorgio Armani revealed his take on the coming spring 2013 season. It feels, as Armani is often wont to do, familiar. And yet it has evolved.
Giorgio Armani may be a product of his greatest successes, but he is not without evolution. That evolution is both rooted in the designer’s strengths and responsive to the modern world. For spring / summer 2013 that sees Armani craft a eponymous collection that plays to the best of his masculine tailoring and adopts it to modern tastes as well as needs.
Those tastes include the on-fashion – slightly heeled shoes finished in a silver sit somewhere between school girl and statement, while the overt masculinity of autumn 2012 has been put to bed – and the necessary. While the collection’s clothes are going to resonate and find an audience – embellished to the theme of a stellar kaleidoscope many a piece intentionally and superbly caught the preceding spotlight – it wasn’t hard to walk away with a great sense of the accessories. The headpieces weren’t for everyone, but you’d be hard pressed to find a person who didn’t realise the instant appeal (and commercial success) of the spring 2013 collection’s box handbags. And in this economy, one in which Italy’s commercial fashion interests are receding, a collection of strong accessories is certainly needed.
Giorgio Armani has given spring / summer 2013 a collection that plays to the classic Armani woman; slightly of her time, slightly of someone else’s. Often strong in its statements, it’s likely that it’ll seem stronger away from the catwalk though. To understand this you’ll need to look to the pictures to see plenty of dresses over pants. This felt like a styling misstep, one that most won’t repeat; this is a collection of many a beautiful piece, there was no need to mute them with looks that lacked a strong contrast or distinct appeal.
