At first glance there may seem something disperate about the tightly structured, panelled pieces – first in rich florals, later in a to-die-for grey leather ensemble that futuristically could be the uniform of some X-Men heroine – and the sweeping gowns of J. Mendel’s resort / pre-spring 2013 collection. But if there’s a common thread binding them together it’s that they both seem to follow the lines of, and connect deeply with, the human body. The structured pieces do it with piping and seams and body-hugging panels. The soft, flowing gowns do so with their sinewy micro-pleats and delicate cut-aways. All of the pieces do it remarkably well.
