Sailors and Jean Paul Gaultier are hardly strangers, so a nautical theme for spring / summer 2013 came as no great surprise. But of course fashion is about reinvention and reinterpretation, and Gaultier’s new take was one with a few twists and turns.
This summer the JPG man is not just a sailor but a world traveller. He’s sailed the seven seas and experienced every exotic culture, his appearance a swirl of cultural influences from East and West. Turbans, mandarin collars and embelishments reflect this.
On the more literal nautical front, flat square sailor collars were prominent. One even manifested, in intricately beaded form, on a black evening jacket.
Shirts and a slouchy short-sleeved jumpsuit were presented in a print that had a vintage sailor-tattoo appeal. Go for these in a regular collar – not the sailor collar – if you want to keep it understated.
