KISS, in full makeup. That’s what everyone will remember after leaving the John Varvatos fall / winter 2014 show on a rock’n'roll legend high. The band weren’t just playing over the loudspeakers, they were there in person to help Varvatos take his bow. They’ve been working with the designer on his latest ad campaign, and it was their mythos – that of “the superhero, a man in disguise with incredible powers” – that inspired this season’s collection.
And the collection was Varvatos at his best: rolling out at first in a dark cloud of rock’n'roll romanticism, lightening up later with cream tuxedos, sharply tailored jackets and metallic accents. The key fabrics were luxurious ones – shearling, jacquard silk, flannel and embossed metallic calfskin. The rock spirit was all the way through it: Varvatos’ runways always seem to have the coolest hair, the sharpest cheekbones, the most palpable attitude. I guess that’s why you’re either a fan, or you’re not. If you are, this collection will give you plenty to lust after.
