Sherbety pinks and cute, cartoonish space prints kicked off Karen Walker’s New York fashion week (NYFW) show. As it progressed it swirled in more of that magical mix of elements Walker is known for: femininity with an edge of masculinity (floaty blouses mixed with cropped slouchy pants and loafers), tailoring vs fluidity, retro reinterpreted as modern.
Walker’s spring / summer 2013 collection revelled in its whimsical retro prints but momentarily forgot its quirkiness on a few select occasions – like when an adorable baby blue organza belted dress sailed the runway matched by a straw peaked cap. But regardless of whether it was sweetly simple, polka dotted or taking cues from ’60s space cartoons, Walker’s collection kept one thing in mind: effortlessness.
