When Kate Sylvester showed her Spring 2010/2011 collection at RAFW (Australian fashion week), my love of New Zealand fashion was strongly validated. The masculine elements were subtle and oh-so-cool – creating a perfect female dandy look: man-style sock garters, fob chains and oversized Regency neck bows included. Contrasting to the little masculine details were perfectly feminine outfits that looked as if they walked straight out of a cosy country cabin and onto the runway.
Not everyone will prefer Sylvester’s historical twists and varied feminine/masculine inspirations to the overt glamour of other designers; but for me, she was a definitely favourite.
