Kitty Grace’s otherworldly offerings

Powering through the galaxy and on to the Perth Fashion Week (SFPFW) runway, Kitty Grace (formerly of now-defunct label Illionaire) showed a legion of fearless, futuristic females in looks that ranged from overtly sexy to unexpectedly understated. Models with super-saturated makeup and powdercoated hair strutted as best they could in gold platform sandals that seemed determined to fall off (with more than one girl ending up with a shoe in her hand), but none broke rank, showing the audience that this was a collection not to be interrupted.

Frocks reigned supreme in otherworldly crystal prints, a spectrum of rich hues, from tangerine to sapphire and slatey neutrals, with tonal outfits showing off detailed cuts. Bustiers and harness style halters featured heavily, with clever strapping revealing open backs (no Hollywood Tape required) and near-invisible mesh giving the impression of floating panels. Hemlines ranged from micro to maxi, predominantly asymmetrical, though some wide splits that may pose problems for real-world wearability. Metropolis met Mad Men in a corseted lilac leather pencil dress, a sophisticated standout along with the only black look, a mesh and leather bustier tee atop a sheer sweeping skirt.

While the subtler pieces were amped for the runway – bloused silk shirts with cutaway cuff detailing tucked into cheeky track shorts, cuffed into hotpants, a shirtdress unbuttoned revealed a bodysuit underneath – one could easily imagine them slotting into a work wardrobe. A silk kimono jacket layered effortlessly, a structured collarless jacket was less successful. Concave leather belts, like external corsets, were a striking addition over daywear and eveningwear alike, fashioning a contemporary hourglass figure.

Grace knows she’s dressing a confidant woman, but shrewdly doesn’t expect her to only be of modelesque proportions. Offering enough variety in fit to capture the imaginations of many shapes and sizes she looks ready to take this world by storm – and perhaps a few intergalactic ones too.
