KrisVanAssche reinvents the humble tee

For spring 2013 Kris Van Assche was celebrating that timeless wardrobe essential: the t-shirt. But for a collection that was even unambiguously titled TEE, it managed to hold some surprises: Van Assche’s collection may have been building a shrine to the humble t-shirt, but it was also reinventing it.

In the world of the Krisvanassche brand a tee is also a shirt, and vice-versa. Van Assche created hybrids: collars and fronts of poplin shirts “blended with the back and sleevces of a jersey cotton t-shirt.” Looking at these plays oddly on the brain, the effect being quite like a short-sleeved shirt layered over a long-sleeved tee – only in what feels like optical illusion, the tee has twisted itself to the outside.

Van Assche’s (PFW) show also played to the sporty and the minimalist, with black, white, beige and grey the prominent colours. A maroon print with indigo ribbing offered up a colour break that stood out on the runway.
