Butterfly motifs aren’t uncommon in the fashion world, but Lie Sang Bong’s really jumped off the dresses and into the third dimension. This was a spring / summer 2013 collection that put lepidoptera under the aesthetic microscope and saw them the for all their colourful, flighty glory.
One of Lie Sang Bong’s outfits even looked like it could be made from a living, shifting, swarm of blue butterflies that had shaped themselves into a one-shouldered dress. And the Paris fashion week (PFW) closing of clear plastic raincoats and umbrellas – all butterfly imprinted – cemented the theme in every attendee’s memory.
In between all the insect motifs were flighty pieces made from a graphic houndstooth-ish print, or one of tiny hearts; and plenty of pieces that – even without any literal references – looked in their colour and shape to be inspired by greenery and gardens.
