Some designer collaborations can come across as a bit iffy. But that Louise Gray has collaborated with Topshop doesn’t just make sense, it was basically obligatory. Gray’s crayon box of colours, patchwork clashes and bold eccentricities are the kind that are catnip to London’s youth, and what better way to reach them en masse?
Gray’s spring / summer 2013 collection brought all of that colourful madness by the bucketloads. You could imagine her London fashion week (LFW) models having emerged from a giant craft-slash-dressup box having patched together an outfit with fabric scraps, newspaper clippings, glue and scissors.
But if that description makes Gray’s collection sound like a hot mess, it’s not intended to. There’s always method to Gray’s madness, and all of these outfits worked within the bounds of her aesthetic. And of course, off the runway you don’t have to wear it all at once: individually each dress, jacket or pair of leggings has its own cool factor that’ll work on a different level without the clashes.
