How to: Miss Unkon’s pleated up-do

The soft femininity and de-structured tailoring in Miss Unkon’s spring / summer 2012 / 2013 collection came with a big dose of irony. While pastel hues and pleats dominated the silhouette, the hair and makeup narrated another story.

The label’s creative visionary Courtney Meyer said, “Miss Unkon has toughened up and she now faces the world with an edginess of rock and grunge”. While the clothes intentionally failed to send that message through, the hair and make-up team created smoky eyes and pleated hair updo to Nirvana classics blaring from the iPod speakers in the back tent of Australian fashion week (MBFWA).

Cream contoured cheekbones, matte nude lips and strong black eye socket dictated a strong make-up trend for spring. While hair director for Schwarzkopf Professional, Craig Smith, clashed elements of youth and romanticism with punk rock to create this slick hairstyle.

“We were aware of the details at the back of the garment, so an updo was a must. This style is extremely wearable and translatable off the way,” said Smith.

If you want to take a three-strand ponytail to the next level, here are some simple how-to steps to get you started:

  1. Start with a high ponytail, almost in line with the crown, and secure tightly with a hair tie.
  2. Braid a three-strand plait and accessorise it with a striking hair accessory. Smith used inch-wide metal rings to accessorise the Miss Unkon show and bring out its punk rock feel.
  3. Bring the braid to the front of the head and whip it backwards. This will mount a somewhat eight-shaped structure on the top of the head.
  4. Secure with bobby pins and settle all flyaways with hair spray.
