You’d be hard pressed to say that Monika Chiang didn’t hit the right note in her fall 2012 collection, shown this morning during New York fashion week. With its New York sensibilities it’s a collection that you’d want to describe as both sexy and sophisticated were the term not so naff. So let us say this instead: it’s a collection of classic, sometimes revisionist, ideas whose proportions and cuts are going to do much to compliment those with exactly the right assets. Namely legs.
Like others designers putting their take on the fall / winter 2012 season, Monika Chiang has embellished her latest collection with the flares and furs that are very much a part of the ongoing 1970s fashion revival. Where the collection’s true strength lies, however, is where the silhouettes are cut to flatter. That’s not to say that they’re cut skin tight, in fact one of the strongest looks is the styling of a slim sweater over tap pants, but it is to say that short leather shorts paired high-break, double breasted blazer isn’t an outfit that is always going to be winter appropriate, but it certainly is one that’s going to make an impression legs willing.
