If finding new ways to revive plaid is the mission of the season, than Alessandro Dell Dell’Acqua has put himself in the running. His fall / winter 2013 No. 21 show opened with two types of tartan that looked from a distance like they might have been the love child of ’90s era grunge, but up close were luxuriously textured and paired with the (what once would have been a surprise) contrast of a sparkling sequinned skirt.
But never mind the fact that glam-meets-grunge contradictions no longer have any shock value – that seemed to end the moment the Jil Sander runway saw beanies paired with lace netting – Dell’Aqua’s fall offering had plenty of refinement and plenty of cool factor beyond the more obvious mashings of tomboy pants and sequins. Like embroidered bird motif skirts and mohair knits, and bejewelled loafers that offer the practical woman a chic and glamorous alternative to heels.
