Four make-up looks and an equal amount of hairstyles accompanied Oscar de la Renta’s controversial, but above all gorgeous fall / winter 2013 collection. The garments, still exploring de la Renta’s heritage and long-established feminine aesthetic were subject to a myriad of rumors and speculations the past weeks, in regard of the type of influence John Galliano’s sudden “designer in residence” position at de la Renta would have over this season’s general direction. With plenty of news-worthy itmes, the line up did feel glanced over by a fresh pair of eyes.
There was a point, right in the beginning of the collection when the fun and whimsical de la Renta garments appeared to be left behind, only to be replaced by a series of wrap coats with nipped waists, knee length pencil skirts and elegant gloves. Right away the word “Dior” came bursting to everyone’s lips, but it wasn’t that long until the show returned to its destined path.
Fit-and-flare silhouettes with breathtaking floral embroideries, hooded capes worn over sheer bodices and a field of prints. Many, luxurious and opulent, slowly leading the way towards evening wear. There, ready to conclude a mysterious affair, jewel-toned gowns, silk ball gowns and other classic de la Renta looks proved that there was still much of him to the story, contrary to others beliefs.
