Paul Smith autumn 2014: sleepy sophistication

What’s the difference between rolling out of bed in your pyjamas, and getting dressed into an outfit that deliberately looks like you’ve rolled out of bed in your pyjamas? Paul Smith knows the answer, and it’s not as straightforward as you might think. To do it right you need to pay heed to subtleties, like using only the finest silks, mixing panels of prints, and giving everything a distinctly cool and masculine flavour. Take a silk smoking robe as an example; with a horizontal break in the hem and sleeves separating a luxurious burgundy cuff from a rich purple stripe, it was part way dressing gown, part way day dress. A black silk jumpsuit had the same intriguing effect.

From night (inspired) to day, Smith moved to masculine tailoring: beautifully constructed overcoats, relaxed pants cropped above the ankle, lightweight silks played against rich sheepskin accents and tailored jackets with intricate geometric panelling. If you want to look like you’re high maintenance, like you pack hours of effort into looking beautiful, then move right along. But, really, who does? For she who wants to swan around looking effortlessly cool, sexy, and sophisticated… there’s Paul Smith. You’ll want it all.
