The soundtrack blazed with thumping retro-modern rock and psychedelic washes of sound. Tame Impala, Triptides, the Allah-Las. And like their old sounds made new again, Smith’s clothes borrowed from the past and bettered it, making it relevant to the now.
The ’70s rock inspirations feeding into Smith’s spring / summer 2014 collection were present in the hairstyles, in the attitudes, in the laid back swagger of the models. Colour and print were – as always with Paul Smith – paramount: fuchsia, baby pink, yellow, peach, unexpected combinations in colour blocks, complimented by more subdued greys and whites and pure black.
And if Smith’s psychedelic ’70s mood wasn’t apparent enough, you need have only looked up close at some of the prints. Dizzing black and white graphics were bursts of mushrooms and stars and butterflies: like a drug-induced dream, but an elegant one at that.
