Prada’s power players: men’s F/W ’12

Miuccia Prada cast more than models in her fall / winter 2012 menswear show: she cast actors. Not just any actors, and not the typically chisel-jawed, pop culture icons either. Walking the Milan fashion week (MFW) runway were strong, silent types that excel at their craft, win awards for it, are icons of a more enduring kind.

They epitomised the mood of the collection. Serious, but laced with eccentricity. The likes of Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman, Adrien Brody and Jamie Bell dressed up in clothing that’s fabricated from the same power they yield in their hands. Miuccia was inspired by the way in which clothing can both convey and illicit power, and she stitched that notion into strict silhouettes, high necks, and hard lines.

And while we didn’t expect military to make a return so soon, this is surely military of a different kind to both the highly decorative and the functional combat that we’ve seen played out in the past five years. Whether on the battlefield or in Hollywood, this type of dressing is all about the power players showing the underlings who’s boss.

If Prada’s fall 2012 show was a movie it focused on the villain. Or at least the hardened anti-hero.
