Ralph Lauren’s spring / summer 2013 collection rocked New York fashion week (NYFW) with its typical gentlemanly swagger but with a surprisingly strong shout-out to perhaps the most unappreciated neutral: brown. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Amongst the leather, linen, and wool creations were a number of brown-coloured designs, from zip-up biker jackets to crew neck sweaters. In the latter outfit, brown actually dominated the entire ensemble – a rather daring move that executed well.
While the rest of the palette was relatively unsurprising, vivid oranges, reds, and blues appeared in a continuation of the Native American pattern trend, which is clearly here to stay in our wardrobes through at least next spring/summer… with some new interpretations. One thought-provoking vest in particular took a nearly psychedelic perspective upon the existing Navajo patterns. The visual became longer with messier lines in contrast to the condensed, clean lines that we are used to seeing as of late.
Suit jackets were predictably fitted, but double breasted jackets definitely made a bold showing. One and three button blazers were absent from the collection, with the lion’s share of the attention going toward the aforementioned double breasted style as well as two button jackets. Although suit hues included charcoal, grey, cream, and blue, one coral sport coat in particular sets off the “summer statement piece” alarm. Heads up, gents!
With this collection, Ralph Lauren continues to ride its status as a staple of men’s wardrobes and a go-to brand for classic, American menswear.
