When it comes to fall 2012, two colours dominate: red and gold. We’ve counted the two of them on in-numerous catwalks interpreted a plethora of ways. Often the gold is set against black and the red worn as a block colour. That’s the norm, if you will. How the two colours are interpreted is where each designer varies. Designer Reem Acra has offered up them up at different ends of the spectrum: in the demure and in the glamorous.
How do you solve a problem like a demure women’s suit? Or put another way: how do you make a houndstooth suit interesting? Run a gold thread through it as Reem Acra has. And then pair it was a sheer lace, key-hole blouse. That certainly adds interest to a suit, but more so it adds life. Suits are by their nature static – they conform to our body shapes. So too do some dresses – models may pound the catwalk at such a speed that you think they’re in an Olympic event, but some dresses are simply cut to conform to the body and offer up little in the way of movement. A gold thread here or there breathes life into a piece, each thread catching and reflecting light; and Reem Acra’s fall 2012 collection applies gold liberally, often with an Art Deco bent. Pay attention to that twist as fall 2012 approaches: gold, Art Deco, movement.
As for the red, Reem Acra fall 2012 avoids the bold red that so many other designers favour and against the collection’s gold pieces the maroon coloured pieces naturally feel less exciting. But there’s still something of note here for the season: if bold red isn’t your thing (it certainly doesn’t work with every skin complexion) go for a colour that’s a red hue.
Gold, red, did I mention the show stoppers? Dresses-cum-downs, some gold, some black, but all with a wow factor (or two). That appeal was woven courtesy of the two ever-green trends that more and more people are willing to indulge in: sheer and cut away (the thigh high slits certainly didn’t detract, either). Each of the dresses are head turners, the splits begging to compliment legs of Karlie Kloss proportions and the gowns just itching to appear on a red carpet or three. And if they don’t, I’ll eat my hat.
