The autumn / winter 2013 collection by Roksanda Ilincic was a trip down movie lane; pieces swanning down the runway were a cross between Monsters Inc based on the set of The Little House on the Prairie meets Independence Day. Let me explain… we were introduced to a colour palette of nudes and pastels to begin with; a lot of marshmallow pink, dark eau de nil and baby neon orange constructed into a panelled semi-patchwork midi dress, sitting next to a faux-leather, girly pink oversized skirt and blazer coat. The real Monsters Inc references comes to light when all colours are fused together in a print; tartan-esque checks on a pink backdrop, pressed with a floral print takes us back to visions of little Boo.
The feel of this autumn 2013 range was a little enigmatic; inner-wear pieces were floaty, summery and light during the first half of the show, teamed with multi facetted, oversized faux-fur, coat and boleros; an antithesis collection some might say. Whilst embroidered faux-leather glided down the catwalk, so did handkerchiefs pinned into subordinate and neat up do’s. Now you see how we’ve stepped onto the prairie? Tame skirts, dresses and coat lengths engulfed the range as everything fell at mid-calf length.
The transformation from pretty ladies to hard textures wasn’t as subtle as we would have thought. Dark eau de nil was now paired with noir metallic panels, almost mirroring that freshly laid wet tar on the road; minus the daft smell of course. A metallic tar-esque dress, with contrasting waistband, gave the impression of debris and destruction. Mulberry red paired with shiny dark chocolate and a bomber jacket for good measure makes way for a season laced in nostalgia.
