We weren’t the only ones to baulk at a name change which meant that, in some sense, Yves Saint Laurent was no longer. But credit where credit is due: Hedi Slimane has certainly breathed new life into the fashion house with his spring 2013 outing under the Saint Laurent label.
And while the fashion house’s name change is actually a reversion to past days, one could also argue that the the lighter name heralds in a lighter overtone of the very same origins. Sure, you can highlight the 1970s fashion vibe, but who wasn’t expecting it? Past seasons often avoided it, but there was a reason that there was more than one change at the top of the fashion house. And that light 1970s touch is precisely what was needed. Reimaginings of ’70s fashions have been with us for some time, but they’ve often been clones as opposed to modern reworkings. There’s little of that here. Instead Slimane has create a collection with the same strengths that made his work at Dior Homme so influential: it’s full of ideas that seem familiar, yet wholly more modern and thus far more appealing.
