Sometimes there’s a fine line between the natural world and the industrial one, if you consider where man-made structures draw their materials from. For autumm / winter 2013 sass & bide were taking inspiration from both, mirroring the frameworks of the industrial world while “finding couterbalance in the beauty and spirit of the natural.” As the spotlight centered on fierce metallics and bright yellow patent you could twist your imagination to fit with either: was this a dress woven from a vision of raw, earth-born precious metals, or a dress inspired by the cold steel of industrial urban towers?
What was apparent was that these harder elements of cage structures and metallic accents shone all the brighter when contrasted against soft lines and feminine fabrics. sass & bide are expert at bringing contrasts into harmony, and the Wintergate collection did it in new ways. There was an overall clean refinement where the usual level of detail was stripped back and tailoring took its place as the statement. And where some embellished, cutaway minidresses felt like typical sass & bide fare, their girl wouldn’t have to freeze going out in them come nightfall: just add one of the cool, funnel-necked jackets.
